Results achieved: The innovation has been field-tested in four Kenyan counties — Meru, Kiambu, Nakuru, and Kakamega — under the leadership of the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, through the AICCRA Project and CGIAR Gender and Social Inclusion Accelerator, in partnership with iShamba. The participatory validation involved 120 farmers (80 women and 40 men) representing diverse agroecological zones. Through human-centered design workshops, farmers assessed the clarity, trust, and usability of AI-generated advisories. Findings showed that the refined, gender-responsive AI model produced more inclusive and contextually relevant messages, particularly for women farmers, and improved communication clarity across SMS, WhatsApp, and call-center formats. The underlying dataset—drawn from over 9,000 iShamba farmer queries—helped identify and correct gender and language biases, leading to a 21% increase in satisfactory advisory responses and a 60% improvement in response time during testing Expected outcomes: The innovation is expected to scale through iShamba’s network of over 550,000 farmers, enabling delivery of bias-aware, multilingual, and gender-responsive digital advisories nationwide. It also aims to inform the integration of inclusive AI frameworks into national and regional climate information systems. In the long term, the approach will enhance women’s equitable access to digital extension services, strengthen trust and decision-making capacity, and provide a replicable model for applying ethical, gender-sensitive AI in agricultural advisory systems across Africa.

Intended beneficiaries/users

The primary beneficiaries are women and men smallholder farmers in Kenya who rely on digital advisory platforms like iShamba for farming and climate information. The innovation benefits both groups by improving clarity, relevance, and trust in AI-generated advisories while addressing gendered barriers to access. It is locally adapted through human-centered design workshops that reflect farmers’ languages, needs, and contexts. Complementary solutions—such as agronomic guidance, seasonal forecasts, and extension services—will support sustained use and equitable impact across diverse farming households.
